St Mary’s Choirs

Singing and Making Music to the Lord

-Ephesians 5:19

St Mary’s has a tradition of choral music which stretches back over six hundred years. Currently, we are fortunate to have the Parish Choir, our Chamber Choir ‘St Mary’s Voices’, and Melody Makers for our youngest singers.

Our Parish Choir is open to men, women, and children from seven years up.

Our Choir sings at our 11am service each Sunday and at Evensong once a month at 4:30pm.

There is a rehearsal for upper voices from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings. For lower voices, rehearsal is 6:30pm until 7pm on Fridays which leads into the full Choir rehearsal from 7pm to 8pm for everyone.

The Choir has been affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music since 1929 and was awarded membership of the prestigious St Nicholas Guild in 1993. Choir members have the opportunity to develop their musical knowledge and vocal techniques through RSCM Voice for Life training sessions which are held on Tuesday and Friday evenings. The sessions have an informal atmosphere and the singers can benefit from individual, friendly support with highly-qualified and experienced music teachers and singers.

Joining our Choirs

We are always keen to hear from youngsters or adults interested in joining us! You do not have to read music or have any prior knowledge of church music. Singing with St Mary’s Choir gives you the opportunity to develop your musical skills and to sing some of the most beautiful music in the Western classical tradition in the majestic worship space of St Mary’s church. You will find a friendly environment where we aim to nurture each singer’s musical ability.

We invite you to come along to one of our practices or open events and get a sense of what being in the choir will be like, without any commitment on your part. We strive to offer first-rate musical training, and several recent and current members have gone on to hold choral and organ scholarships, to study music at university, and take up professional careers in music.

For an informal discussion, please contact our Director of Music who will always be pleased to hear from you.
